Beyond February: Ian Hoyte
Ian Hoyte arrived on the campus of Wilfrid Laurier University in 1984 to study Economics and Computer Science and was a Golden Hawk from 1984-87.
Hoyte chose Laurier for its renowned campus feel, excellent teacher-to-student ratio and the people he met while on a recruiting visit.Â
After graduation, he established his own company doing computer systems design and programming for 17 years. He then began his second career with the Federal Government as a Senior Information Systems Auditor and Data Analytics specialist.Â
Inspired by Legends of Laurier inductees Gary Jeffries and Richard Newbrough, Ian started coaching football in 1988 as the defensive coordinator of the Ottawa Bootleggers, the only Canadian participant in the US semi-pro football league.Â
The next year, they went undefeated and were ranked #1 before falling to Racine Wisconsin in the national championship game held in Ottawa.Â
In 1997, Ian was the linebackers coach for the Ottawa Gee Gee’s, which lost to UBC in the Vanier Cup.Â
Three years later, Ian became the special teams coach for the Gee Gee's when they won the 2000 Vanier Cup against the Regina Rams.Â
While coaching football and giving back to the community, Ian and his wife Nicole raised three children: Lia (an All-Canadian Rugby player at Concordia) and sons Trevor and Nathan.Â
After leaving USports, Ian coached his sons in the community and high school. Trevor and Nathan became highly sought-after U SPORTS recruits and Trevor is currently a member of the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL.
With retirement approaching, Ian continues to give back by coaching football, which was so instrumental in creating great experiences and memories in his own life.
