NORTH YORK, Ont. - A dominant second half from the defending national champions propelled the current #1-ranked York Lions to a 3-0 win over the Golden Hawks Friday evening.
This result sees the Golden Hawks fall to a 3-3-1 record, sitting tied for fifth with Guelph in the OUA West.
Laurier goalkeeper
David Carano put up 12 saves on 15 on-target attempts from the Lions, who had 25 total attempts compared to Laurier's five.
However, the Golden Hawks were able to keep the first half deadlocked at zero, playing a very strong defensive game as York piled on the pressure, registering 14 offensive chances in the first half alone.
Laurier's defence finally succumbed to York, as the Lions were awarded a penalty in the 48th minute after York midfielder Matthew Fischer was taken down, allowing OUA scoring leader Christian Zeppieri to grab his ninth tally of the season to open the scoring.
York added two more goals late in the game as Laurier struggled to generate offence, only registering five shots with two of those being on target.
Laurier will face York once more on home turf on October 16.
In the meantime, the Golden Hawks will look to turn the tide, returning home to face the McMaster Marauders this Friday, October 2. Kickoff at Ansley Alumni Field is set for 8:15 pm.
