WATERLOO, Ont. - The #4-ranked Golden Hawks opened their 2026 campaign with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over the Guelph Gryphons under the lights at University Stadium, powered by key contributions on offense, defence, and special teams. 

Here are the Laurier football Players of the Week, presented by Nothers The Award Store.

OFFENSE
Will Russell - Quarterback

Russell impressed in his first career OUA start under centre, completing 20 of 28 passes (71.4%) for 242 yards while adding two rushing touchdowns. The business major from Hamilton, Ont., efficiently directed a Laurier attack that accumulated 383 yards of total offence in a memorable debut as the Golden Hawks' starting quarterback.

This is Russell's first career Player of the Week award.

DEFENCE
Joey Edlington - Linebacker

Edlington anchored the Golden Hawks' defensive effort with seven total tackles, 2.5 sacks, and a key third-down coverage stop that helped keep the opposition off the field.

The sociology major from Corunna, Ont., was disruptive throughout the game, including registering one of his 2.5 sacks with less than a minute remaining as Laurier protected its lead and Guelph drove downfield in search of a last-chance score. His pressure helped preserve the Golden Hawks' victory.

This is Edlington's second career Player of the Week award.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Tayshaun Jackson - Running Back/Returner

Jackson delivered a game-changing performance on special teams.

The geography major from Windsor, Ont., showcased his game-breaking ability throughout the afternoon, including reeling off the second 120-yard missed field goal return of his career. The touchdown and 245 total return yards provided a major spark that helped fuel the Golden Hawks' victory.

This is Jackson's eighth career Player of the Week award.
