Laurier women's soccer 2026 schedule released

WATERLOO, Ont. - The 2026 Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer schedule was officially announced by Ontario University Athletics (OUA) on Wednesday, setting the stage for a campaign that features early-season tests, playoff rematches, and a marquee rivalry clash.

Laurier opens its 12-game regular season - and its home schedule - on August 30 at Ansley Alumni Field against the Windsor Lancers, a rematch of the Golden Hawks' first-round playoff win from a year ago. Head coach Barry MacLean said the matchup should provide an immediate benchmark.

"They're always a tough team, and I'm glad we've got them at home first," MacLean said. "They're a difficult opponent, especially away. It's a good start for us, and it'll give us a real idea of where we're at for the schedule."

The Golden Hawks then travel north for a two-game set against the Algoma Thunderbirds, marking Laurier's first trip to Sault Ste. Marie since 2022. Laurier is unbeaten in 14 meetings with Algoma dating back to 2014, but MacLean expects a challenging weekend.

"It's a difficult place to go and play. It's obviously a long way - by far our longest travel weekend," he said. "I anticipate they'll be a solid team. Hopefully we can go up there and get some points."

Laurier returns home on September 11 to host the Guelph Gryphons in a quarterfinal rematch from last season. Guelph advanced to the OUA final and remains one of the conference's top contenders.

"They're probably the most talented team in the league," MacLean said. "We know a lot about them. We felt last year we matched up well late in the season, and in the playoff game we were undone by a tough call. But we'll prepare well for them, and I'm sure we'll give them everything they can handle."

The schedule's marquee rivalry game arrives October 8, when Laurier hosts the Waterloo Warriors in the annual Battle of Waterloo. The Golden Hawks carry a seven-game winning streak into the matchup, though MacLean emphasized the unpredictability of the rivalry.

"We've prepared well for those games," he said. "Being at home (this year) helps. It's a different vibe altogether when you go across the street. But they've had a lot of changes over the last few years, and they'll be well prepared for us. It's always a really important game."

Laurier's Senior Night is set for October 16 against the York Lions, where the program will recognize a group that has played a key role in recent success.

"We'll have a lot of players (recognized) who've been integral to what we've done the last few years," MacLean said.

The Golden Hawks wrap up the regular season on the road in Guelph, a fixture that could carry postseason implications depending on the standings.

"It's a tough one. It's almost like you're starting the playoffs before the playoffs start," MacLean said. "That game might be really critical for us and might not mean as much for them, which can be to their advantage. But it's a long way off, and there are a lot of good teams in the league."

MacLean pointed to the depth within the OUA West as a defining feature of Laurier's schedule, noting that few points will come easily.

"Every game we play is almost like a playoff game," he said. "You can't discount anyone. It's a battle every time you step on the field."
