Ringette qualifies for Ontario Provincial Championships after strong season start

The Laurier ringette team has been building momentum since the season opened in September, putting together an impressive run of performances, tournament success, and national-level competition.

One of the earliest highlights of the season came in late October, when the Golden Hawks travelled to Oshawa for the Oshawa Storm Tournament (October 24-26, 2025). The team delivered a statement performance, capturing gold after a thrilling 5-4 victory over the University of Ottawa in a hard-fought championship game. The win set the tone for what has become a season defined by resilience, teamwork, and growth.

Beyond competition, the team has also helped raise the profile of the sport. Several games were broadcast by 519 Sports Online during tournaments and at University Challenge Cups (UCCs), giving fans the chance to follow along. The team also received national media attention, with CBC interviewing multiple Laurier players to help promote ringette and encourage greater participation and visibility for women in sport.

The Golden Hawks continued to challenge themselves at the University Challenge Cups, competing against top university teams from across Canada, including Saskatchewan, Regina, Alberta, British Columbia, Ottawa, and more. Over the course of five demanding days, the team played nine games and finished third in the consolation pool. With only the top three teams from each province qualifying for UCCs, earning a spot and performing strongly on the national stage was a major accomplishment for the program.

In January, Laurier hosted and competed in the Waterloo Ringette Association Tournament (January 8-11, 2026). The team advanced to Championship Sunday before falling in the semifinals to McMaster, who went on to win the tournament. The run showcased Laurier's consistency and ability to compete deep into competitive events. That momentum carried into February at the Guelph Ringette Association Tournament (February 5-8, 2026), where the Golden Hawks once again struck gold. Laurier defeated the University of Guelph 5-1 in the finals, earning their second tournament championship of the season in dominant fashion.

As the season continues, the Golden Hawks have officially qualified for the Ontario Provincial Championships, taking place March 5-8, 2026, in Kingston. Only eight teams across the province earn a berth at provincials, and Laurier enters the tournament ranked third overall, trailing only Ottawa and the University of Guelph.

With strong results, growing recognition, and a commitment to promoting women's sport, the Laurier ringette team has already made this season one to remember, and they're not done yet.
