WATERLOO, Ont. - Callum Chisholm scored the overtime winner as the Laurier Golden Hawks earned a 3-2 victory over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday night.
The fourth-year defenceman ended the Highway 7 rivalry match-up 4:59 into overtime, scoring his first goal of the season with assists from Travis Verbeek and Connor Haynes.
The victory improved the Golden Hawks' record to 2-2 through four games of the 2026-27 OUA men's hockey season.
Laurier netminder Andrew Ness was outstanding between the pipes, turning aside 45 of the 47 shots he faced to earn the victory.
Captain Bryce Sutherland opened the scoring at 7:29 of the first period, finishing a play set up by Ty Petrou and Max-Antoine Melancon for his first goal of the season.
Guelph answered in the dying seconds of the period. With Melancon in the penalty box for cross-checking, Nathan Allensen converted on the power play at 19:58, with Nolan DeGurse and Dylan Hudon picking up the assists to send the teams into the intermission tied 1-1.
Neither side found the back of the net in the second period, sending the Highway 7 rivals into the third still deadlocked.
Laurier wasted little time retaking the lead.
Just 11 seconds into the third, Justin O'Donnell beat Guelph netminder Olivier Ciarlo for his first goal of the season, with Colin Maund and David Paglia recording the assists to put the Golden Hawks ahead 2-1.
The lead held until the 16:20 mark, when DeGurse scored his second goal of the season to pull the Gryphons even at 2-2 and force overtime.
That set the stage for Chisholm, who found the winner with 2:01 remaining in the seven-minute overtime period.
"It feels good. I don't score too often, so it's nice to score, especially in overtime," said Chisholm postgame. "It's an important win for the team."
Ness' performance at the other end proved just as important. Â
"It's nice to get in the win column with the boys. It's my first win of the season," said Ness. "We had to earn it, but it's definitely a good feeling."
Guelph finished 1-for-2 on the power play, while Laurier went 0-for-1.
The Golden Hawks now hit the road to face the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Centre on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. The game can be seen live on OUA.tv.
