WATERLOO, Ont. – The Golden Hawks women's soccer team controlled the play but couldn't find a breakthrough in a scoreless draw against the Brock Badgers on Sunday afternoon at Ansley Alumni Field,
Looking to extended their unbeaten run to four straight games to start the season, Laurier came out with energy, controlling possession in the opening minutes and pressing Brock deep into their own half.
Midfielder
Tamara Lisser used her powerful leg to send the ball forward and create attacking momentum, while freshman
Sienna Di Blasio impressed with her composure and involvement in transition play.
The Golden Hawks generated several scoring chances, with forwards Annick Larivière and
Ashley Greco testing Brock goalkeeper Shae Mitchell, who turned aside multiple shots to keep her team level.
On the other end, Laurier defenders
Vanessa Bentrovato and Lisser anchored the back line, breaking up attacks and limiting Brock's opportunities mostly to set pieces.
Momentum carried into the later stages as Laurier pushed forward with a string of corner kicks from Greco and determined play from
Kayla Merkley, who consistently challenged for possession and created space in the offensive third.
Brock responded with late pressure, including a close-range chance from Kate Halley in the 83rd minute, but goalkeeper
Mya Brodrecht stood tall to preserve the clean sheet.
After the match, head coach
Barry MacLean praised his team's effort, calling it "one of our best performances of the season."
"We were well organized and won most of our battles. Today's match was less chaotic; we were a lot more composed," he said. "We're still undefeated, no one has been able to find a way to beat us, and we're happy with the mentality and overall atmosphere of the team."
Mya Brodrecht, who earned another clean sheet, reflected on the team's improvement, noting that "today's game went better than Friday's."
"Defensively, we shut them down quicker, we won a lot more balls in the middle, and we had more chances at the top, which was good."
Vanessa Bentrovato also emphasized the team's ability to use the home field to their advantage.
"Since Laurier's field is bigger than Brock's, we felt like we were able to utilize the space more compared to Friday's game," she said.
Bentrovato also credited Merkley's energy, adding that "Kayla was on every ball. She's a tough player with lots of energy."
The match closed with aggressive play from both sides, reflecting the intensity of the afternoon. Although the score remained level, Laurier's blend of veteran stability and emerging talent showed promise.
Both Brodrecht and Bentrovato expressed confidence that goals will soon follow for the Golden Hawks as the team continues to build momentum.
