Back-and-forth with McMaster ends in 1-1 draw

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Golden Hawks and McMaster Marauders played to a 1–1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Ansley Alumni Field.

From the opening whistle, both teams pressed hard, trading fouls and chances.

Laurier looked dangerous early, with Luigi Bello and Divraj Sandhu testing McMaster goalkeeper Ethan Cagalj.

McMaster's best chance in the early stages came from a header by Niko Eskit, but Golden Hawks keeper David Carano was equal to the task.

The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Nathan Dennis finished off a pass from Arber Osdautaj, giving Laurier the 1–0 advantage.

Fueled by the goal, the Golden Hawks continued to push forward, but the Marauders held on to trail by just one heading into the break.

The second half was just as aggressive, with heavy challenges and possession battles across the pitch.

Laurier midfielder and captain Sam Ghouli stood out by keeping the Hawks steady in possession, while Bello continued to generate shots on net.

However, McMaster took advantage of a key moment in the 68th minute when Amir Shirazi converted from the penalty spot, bringing the score to 1–1.

From there, the game remained wide open.

Laurier created multiple scoring opportunities, with efforts from Maksym Telishchuk, Andrea Chiechi, and Yusef Rehman all narrowly missing or being turned away by Cagalj.

McMaster nearly stole the result late with a shot from Nicolas Vina, but Carano came up big to secure the draw.

After the match, Carano said he was proud of the team's growth.

"We worked a lot harder today, and our structure was much better than Friday," he said. "Fighting until the end and believing in each other is what made the difference."

Ghouli highlighted the importance of a strong start and the team's underdog mentality.

"We played from the beginning, which we struggled with on Friday. Across the league, we're probably seen as underdogs, but that can work to our advantage going into the last three games and playoffs."

Laurier head coach Mario Halapir praised his team's effort and discipline, saying, "We battled from the first minute until the last and stuck to the game plan. We have what it takes to compete."

With the 1–1 draw, Laurier adds another point to the standings but now finds itself tied with the Algoma Thunderbirds for the sixth and final playoff spot in the OUA West division, adding even more weight to the coming weekend's doubleheader.
