WINDSOR, Ont. - Laurier's women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2–0 victory over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon, powered by strong defensive play and timely scoring.
The Golden Hawks weathered early pressure from the Lancers, with goalkeeper
Mya Brodrecht setting the tone by turning aside multiple shots in the opening minutes. The second-year health sciences major from Kitchener, Ont. was steady throughout the first half, denying Windsor's best chances, including saves on efforts from Avery Comartin and Vanessa Corry.
The breakthrough came just before halftime when
Taya Johnson found the back of the net in the 40th minute. Set up by a long ball by
Tamara Lisser on a set piece, Johnson capitalized on her opportunity to give the Hawks a 1–0 lead heading into the break.
Laurier carried the momentum into the second half, generating immediate pressure on Windsor keeper Izzy Barrette with attempts from
Jada Johnson,
Jessica Breda, and
Vanessa Bentrovato.
The Hawks' persistence paid off late in the match after being awarded a penalty kick in the 85th minute.
Ashley Greco calmly stepped up and put enough on the shot to watch it roll over the line despite the keeper getting a piece of it, doubling the lead and sealing the result.
Defensively, Laurier stood tall against a flurry of Windsor chances in the final 20 minutes, with Brodrecht recording several key stops to preserve the clean sheet.
With the win, the Golden Hawks moved into sole possession of second place in the OUA West - four points behind division-leaders Guelph.
