WINDSOR, Ont. - In a competitive matchup, the #9-ranked Windsor Lancers extended their winning streak to nine games with a 71-64 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in an intense tilt that remained tightly contested until the final quarter.
Both teams displayed exceptional effort, making it a thrilling contest for fans.
Windsor established an early lead with dominant paint play from Mya Iriah and Vanessa Budimunda, who combined for 10 of the Lancers' 22 points, as they finished the first quarter holding a 22-12 lead.
Their aggressive approach inside forced Laurier to adjust defensively.
Laurier kept pace and flipped the script in the second, thanks to Kate White and Cassidy Hirtle, who provided offensive sparks with timely buckets and strong perimeter play with 12 and seven points, respectively.
A late surge by Laurier, including a clutch three-pointer by White, helped tie the game at 37-37 heading into halftime.
Both teams showed resilience, setting the stage for an exciting second half.
Laurier started the third quarter with momentum, taking a 49-41 lead behind strong shooting from Janet Enge and White, who would finish with a game-high 19 points.
Their ball movement and shot selection kept Windsor on their heels. However, the Lancers responded defensively, forcing key turnovers and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities.
Harriet Carey's late three-pointer gave Windsor a 58-55 lead heading into the final quarter.
Laurier struggled to find consistency on offence, while Windsor began to dictate the game's pace.
The Lancers' defence proved the difference-maker in the final frame, as they held Laurier to limited scoring opportunities and just 15% shooting from the field.
Jade Hunte and Kali Grootenboer's contributions helped stretch the lead to double digits, with both players making key plays on both ends.
Laurier fought to stay in the game, but Windsor's ability to capitalize on mistakes and execute at the free-throw line ultimately sealed their victory.
In the closing minutes, Windsor controlled possession and ran down the clock, ensuring that Laurier couldn't mount a late comeback.
Despite Laurier's efforts to claw back, Windsor's poise under pressure allowed them to maintain their lead and remain undefeated on their home court this season at a perfect 9-0.
Laurier dropped to 9-12 but has already clinched one of the final playoff spots.
