WATERLOO, Ont. - Golden Hawks Alyssa Zinn and Aidan Whalen are the Laurier Athletes of the Week, presented by The Hawk Shop.
Zinn, a third-year psychology major from Burlington, Ont., had a strong start to the indoor track and field season at the 50th annual Bob Vigars meet, hosted by the Western Mustangs.
The 2024-25 track team MVP ran in the 1500m and 4x400m races. Zinn placed first in the long-distance event, finishing in 4:52.37, beating the second-place finisher by three quarters of a second.
She was the anchor for the 4x400m relay that also placed first, crossing the line in 3:59.90, beating the other relay team by almost two seconds. The final time set a new Laurier record in the 4x400m relay, beating the previous mark from last season's Ravens Last Chance Meet in Ottawa.
Whalen, a fifth year forward from Cambridge, Ont., led the Golden Hawks men's basketball team to back-to-back wins to end the first half of the season.
Against Guelph, Whalen recorded his third double-double of the season with 24 points, a career high 14 rebounds, and two blocks. Against Lakehead, he scored a career high 34 points on 52.4% shooting, and made the game-winning free throws in overtime.
Whalen leads the team in scoring, averaging 18.3 points per game, and he ranks 13th in the OUA in three-point percentage (40.0%), fifth in free throw percentage (83.3%), seventh in offensive rebounds (29), sixth in total points (201), and third in points per 40 minutes (28.2).
This was the first Laurier Athlete of the Week award for both Zinn and Whalen.
