WATERLOO, Ont. — The Lakehead Thunderwolves struck for four third-period goals en route to a 4–2 win over the Golden Hawks in OUA men's hockey action on Saturday night at the Waterloo Memorial Rec Complex.
Laurier carried a 1-0 lead into the final frame after capitalizing on its first power-play opportunity of the night.
Thomas Lenart opened the scoring at 10:33 of the second period after a feed from Travis Verbeek, with Lucas Chard also picking up an assist.Â
But the game flipped quickly in the third.
Lakehead drew even at 7:14 when Malte Hasselgren beat Laurier goaltender Andrew Ness. The Thunderwolves then moved ahead less than three minutes later as James Fuchs finished off a passing play from Luke Janus and Jack Cook to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.
Laurier found a response while shorthanded. Chard created his own chance at 14:21, intercepting a pass in the neutral zone and racing in on Christian Cicigoi, tucking home the tying goal to make it 2-2. It was Laurier's second special-teams marker of the night.
However, the momentum lasted only 28 seconds. Still on the same Lakehead power play that preceded the shorthanded equalizer, Cook restored the Thunderwolves' lead at 14:49. The goal stood as the eventual winner.
Lakehead sealed the result with an empty-net tally from Richard Whittaker with 1:29 to go.
Laurier (9-5-0-1), which remains tied for first on points in the OUA West, return to action this Thursday looking to break their three-game losing skid when they host the Western Mustangs (5-9-0-0) at 7 pm. It will be the final game of 2025 before the December exam break.
Tickets are available at tickets.laurierathletics.com and the action will be streamed live on OUA.tv
