Thunderwolves nip Golden Hawks to split weekend match-up

WATERLOO, Ont. - After an overtime win on Friday night, Laurier and Lakehead faced-off again for another hard-fought battle. Although the Golden Hawks showed up with the same drive as the night before, the Thunderwolves took the win on Saturday 3-2 for a weekend split.

Tensions were high between teams, with seven infractions occurring within the first period alone.

With too much pressure on net, Lakehead's Dylan Massie beat Laurier starting netminder Paris O'Brien and scored the opening goal just over nine minutes into the game.

The second period was electric, with each team scoring two goals in a battle to take control of the game.

Callum Chisholm struck back at 9:51 in the second frame with the perfect tip of a shot by Lucas Chard.

Laurier's defence struggled to be in the right place last night, which made room for Spencer Blackwell to restore Lakehead's lead just after the halfway mark.

Golden Hawks rookie Kai Stothers was in the right place and wound up for a beautiful goal at 14:53, evening the score again.

Thunderwolves forward Josh Van Unen scored at 16:57, giving Lakehead a 3-2 lead which carried out till the end of the game.

"We have gotten so much better with the offensive zone time but we're not ready in front of the net when it comes time to shoot ... Our game needs to continue to grow so that we're taking advantage of possible rebounds and tips," said Laurier's manager of men's hockey operations and head coach Kevin Forrest was happy with the battle Laurier continues to show, but scoring still seems to be an issue for the team.

The Golden Hawks are currently -29 in their goal differential, placing them last in the West division.
