WATERLOO, Ont. -Â It came down to the wire on Saturday afternoon, as Laurier grabbed its first home win of the season in walk-off fashion, 2-1, over the Windsor Lancers at Bechtel Park.Â
The Golden Hawks were down 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning when
Ashton Abols - with his only hit of the day - doubled, scoring two runs.
Laurier was strong on the mound, led by starter Max Zentil who was superb. The hurler gave up just three hits over seven innings, striking out three and walking two.Â
Jordan Miller appeared in relief for Laurier before making way for
Noah Young - who eventually earned the win.
After seven scoreless innings, the Lancers got on the board in the eighth after Nick Zinyk singled, scoring one run.Â
That would set up Abols for his heroics in the home half of the inning.
Game two of the afternoon's doubleheader would be nowhere near as close, as
Julian Russell drove in four runs on two hits to lead Laurier to a season-high 17 runs in a 17-2 win.Â
Russell tripled in the first inning, scoring three runs, and tripled in the second inning, scoring one.
Windsor opened the scoring in the first inning after Stephen Whalen singled, scoring one run.
Laurier flipped the game on its head in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five runs on five hits to take the lead, 5-1.Â
The biggest blow in the inning was a triple by Russell that drove in three.
The Golden Hawks scored seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the second inning.
Evan Burns singled, scoring three runs, Russell tripled, scoring one,
Jude Malo singled, scoring another, and
Russel Allen doubled, to bring home a pair.
Laurier added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after
Jack Symington doubled and Burns hit into a double play, to bring a run each across the plate.
Tyler Kaal earned the win for Laurier. The starting pitcher allowed seven hits and two runs (one earned) over four innings, striking out two and walking one.Â
Zach Verzosa took the loss for Windsor. Verzosa went just one and two-thirds innings, surrendering nine runs on seven hits, striking out two, and walking three.
Laurier Golden Hawks amassed 15 hits in the game, led by Symington's three.
Peter Dineen, Allen, and
Nolan Goranson also collected multiple hits for Laurier.

The Golden Hawks, who hold a 3-5 record in conference play, visit Jack Couch Park on Saturday to face the Warriors in the Battle of Waterloo at 12 pm and 3 pm.
Laurier will wrap up its regular season in London on Sunday as they take on the Western Mustangs at Labatt Park (noon & 3 pm).
