The Golden Hawks women's softball team continued it's home stand in the second weekend of the season as they took on cross town rivals, the University of Waterloo Warriors.
Brooke Cameron started in the circle for Laurier and was in command early, keeping the Warriors scoreless for the first 3 innings of the game. The Golden Hawk bats continued to be strong in this contest. Scoring 1 in the first and 5 in the second, including a third inside-the-park home run for
Avery Hilpert. Laurier would add 3 more in the bottom of the third to move out front 9-0.
First year student Lauren Artt came into the game pitching in relief in the top of the fourth and set down the Warriors in order. In the bottom of the fourth,
Skylar Smith's double would drive in Maddy Halstead to walk off the game in run rule fashion 10-0.
The second game against the Warriors was more pitcher dominated as
Hayley Shackell would yield just a single run in the first inning and Laurier would match it with a run of their own in the third. It stayed 1-1 until the top of the sixth inning when a lead-off single by
Brooklynn Graul would kick off a string of 5 straight hits to give the Golden Hawks a 4-1 lead. That would be all the runs Laurier would need to win its sixth game of the year and move to 6-0.
Sunday's games featured a match-up between the two top teams in the OUS Western conference, Laurier (6-0) and the Windsor Lancers (6-0).
The Lancers would open the scoring in the first, scoring 1 run in the first and adding another in the second to jump ahead 2-0. Laurier would answer back in the bottom of the second frame. Lauren Artt reached on an infield error and then hits by
Hayley Shackell and Ansa Mian, and a wild pitch would give Laurier its first run. A double by
Avery Hilpert would push Laurier on top 3-2.
A series of Laurier miscues and walks in the fourth would prove costly as Windsor jumped out to a 6-3 lead. The Golden Hawks battled back to within 1 in the bottom of the fifth off an
Emma Diegel single and Maddy Halstead double, which both drove in runs.
Skylar Smith would tie the game driving in a
Hayley Shackell double in the bottom of the 6th.
Windsor started to mount a rally in the top of the seventh with a 1 out walk but a pick off from catcher
Olivia Shaddick to second baseman Maddy Halstead would end that threat. In the bottom of the seventh a pair of walks and a single would load the bases before a
Hayley Shackell double would give the Golden Hawks a walk off win to move to 7-0.
The second game of the doubleheader with Windsor began well for Laurier with starting pitcher
Hayley Shackell striking out five of the first nine batters she faced. However, a series of singles and a couple Laurier errors would result in a 7 run third inning that the Golden Hawks would not be able to overcome ultimately falling 8-0 in five innings.
Laurier continues at home this weekend with games against Brock and McMaster.
