WATERLOO, Ont. - Laurier Athletics & Recreation was proud to honour 113 student-athletes who achieved U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian status for 2023-24 at a special luncheon and ceremony Wednesday morning.
The number represented about 25% of all varsity student-athletes at Laurier and, moreover, every sport had a least one student-athlete that was recognized.
To reach U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian status, student-athletes must maintain a minimum 80% average while balancing a full course load and their athletic training during their terms of competition.
Of the 25% of Laurier student-athletes hitting this milestone, it is also six percentage points higher than the overall general student body reaching the same level of academic achievement.
The two student-athletes who achieved the highest GPAs were also awarded the Luke Fusco Academic & Athletic Achievement Award, named after Laurier's former Dean of Social Work who has - and continues to be - a huge supporter of Laurier Athletics & Recreation.
The award recognizes a male and female who best combine academic and athletic achievement.
Cassidy Hirtle (women's basketball) with a GPA of 11.83 and Declan Graham (men's hockey) with an 11.89 are this year's recipients.
Hirtle is pursuing a degree in the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics and has now received the Luke Fusco award three years in a row. She is also a four-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian.
Meanwhile, Graham is also a four-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian from the Faculty of Science and just the fifth men's hockey player ever to receive the award.
