The Golden Hawks snapped a three-game losing skid and capped the 2024 half of their schedule with a 65-51 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay on Friday night.
The game opened with back-to-back baskets for Laurier's third-year forward
Janet Enge, who put up eight points with nine rebounds on the night to come just short of a double-double.
The Golden Hawks continued shooting a decent 43% from the field in the frame while holding the home side to just 30%.
A saving grace for the Thunderwolves was their free throw shooting. Ally Burke, Keira Chow, and Lily Jones went a combined seven for ten from the line, making up for half of the team's points for the first quarter.
The second began with the Golden Hawks going on a 13-0 run to open up a 19-point lead that increased to 24 by the end of the half as Lakehead only scored six points in the frame.
Third-year forward
Kate White led the charge, grabbing nine points in the second alone.
After going just 2 for 13 and 10 points against TMU a week ago, White returned to form in what eventually amounted to 30 minutes against the Thunderwolves, shooting 53% from the field and recording a game-high 22 points.
Laurier's offence hit a speed bump in the second half, only going 29% from the field, including 1 for 7 from beyond the arc, in the third.
Fortunately, Lakehead's was just as stagnant, as both teams combined for just 27 points.
With Laurier entering the fourth holding a 22-point lead, the offence took a bit of a backseat as the final 10 minutes of regulation match the third as the game's lowest-scoring quarter.
The Golden Hawks only recorded eight points while the Thunderwolves had their best offensive output of the game, posting 19.
It still wasn't enough though as Laurier finished with their fourth double-digit victory of the season.
Ally Burke led Lakehead with 14 points while White scored at least 20 points in a game for the fourth time this year.
Through 11 games, the biology major from Bolton, Ont. ranks fourth in the OUA in points per game, averaging 17.3
Laurier guards
Brittyn Graves and
Cassidy Hirtle also finished in double-digits with 11 points each while Graves recorded a season-high five assists.
The Golden Hawks, who sit fifth in the OUA West division at 4-7, will return to action after the exam and holiday break with a three-game homestand. It begins Saturday, January 11 at 4 pm against their divisional foe, the Windsor Lancers (8-3) who currently sit in second.
