Badgers beat Golden Hawks in mid-week match-up

ST. CATHERINES, Ont. - The Golden Hawks were handed their second straight defeat on Wednesday night, as the #10-ranked Brock Badgers defeated Laurier 50-44 at the Bob Davis Gymnasium in St. Catherines.

The defeat also marked consecutive games that the purple and gold have been held to less than 50 points, after posting a season-low 42 last Saturday against Queen's.

Wednesday night's game started with Laurier needing help finding their rhythm offensively, making just two of their first 13 shot attempts in the opening 10 minutes.

Brock capitalized on the opportunity, with Oluwatito Akinnusi and Shailah Adams combining for eight of the Badgers' 15 points in the frame to open up a seven point advantage.

The home side's stronger start hit a wall though in the second as the Golden Hawks went on a 10-2 run in a span of 7:49 to erase the deficit and take the lead into halftime.

In fact, those two points were the only ones Brock recorded in the quarter as they were held to a paltry 6.7% shooting.

Cassidy Hirtle added another four points in the second quarter to bring her first half tally to eight to go along with five rebounds.

Fans were witness to some back-and-forth action to start the second half before the Badgers ultimately went on a 10-2 run over the final three minutes of the third to regain the lead they wouldn't relinquish.

With both teams combining for just 24 points in the fourth while going 7 for 35 in the shooting department, any chance of a another comeback for the Golden Hawks was snuffed out.

Hirtle and fellow veteran Miranda Campbell both posted a team-high 11 points on a difficult offensive night for Laurier. Sitting in a tie for second in the OUA for made three-pointers (58), the Golden Hawks were only able to connect on three attempts against Brock - their lowest total of the year.

Second chance points and points off 18 Laurier turnovers also proved to be the difference, as the Badgers held the advantage in both categories to record their eighth win in the past 10 meetings against the Golden Hawks dating back to 2019.

Brock's work on the glass was also a factor as they out-rebounded the Golden Hawks 45-33 - including 26 on the defensive glass, which was the team's second-highest total this season.
