Power-play provides scoring punch in Golden Hawks upset of #6 Guelph

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Golden Hawks stretch their point streak to four games with a 1-0 upset win over the #6-ranked Guelph Gryphons.

Coming off a shootout loss Saturday, they were fired up to face their divisional rivals for the first time this season.

Both teams came out strong in a thrilling, fast-paced matchup, marking an intense back-and-forth start to the game.

Laurier set the tone with extended offensive zone time and relentless forechecking, but this didn't slow Guelph down. They, too, had close-call chances that had to keep Laurier goaltender Kayla Renaud on her toes.

The intensity grew as Guelph came out of the intermission, flying, quickly tipping the shots in their direction.

A close call saw a shot skim along the goal line but stayed out.

Under this mounting pressure, Laurier took a timeout midway through the period to regroup and settle into their game—which helped, as their defence held off the offensive push to go into the third knotted at zero.

Halfway through the final frame of regulation, Laurier ramped up the offensive push and finally cracked Guelph's perfect penalty kill record. Abby Glandon scored her second of the season with a snipe from the slot, giving the purple and gold a 1-0 lead.

This lead would ultimately be enough to secure the upset win, giving Kayla Renaud her second shutout in three games after making 31 saves.

"I go into every single game with my mind blank and take everything just one shot and minute at a time," said the third-year kinesiology and physical education major. Impressively, she now sits in the top five across all four OUA goalie statistical leader boards.

With their powerplay goal tonight, the Golden Hawks now hold the top PK percentage in the league, highlighting another leader board achievement that manager of women's hockey operations and head coach Kelly Paton does not take lightly.

"I think from the start of the season, our special teams' units have done a great job of building momentum first and foremost," said Paton. "We are walking away today feeling very proud and excited. This was a huge three points for us."

Up next, the Golden Hawks (4-1-0-1) hit the road for a Sunday afternoon showdown against TMU (1-3-0-0), aiming to keep their point streak alive.

Puck drop at the Mattamy Athletic Centre is at 2:15 pm. Catch the action live on OUA.tv or follow @WLUAthletics on X for updates.
