Golden Hawks beat Brock in OT for first win of the year

WATERLOO, Ont. - For the second night in a row, the Golden Hawks had to play some overtime hockey but this time it went in their favour as they defeated the Brock Badgers 3-2 at the Waterloo Rec Complex for their first win of the season.

The game sheet was anything but clean in the first, with five infractions being called - and four of them against Laurier.

The shorthanded minutes didn't stop the Golden Hawks, as assistant captain Bryce Kilbourne scored low midway through the first period, after being set up by Tyler Hunt and Samuel Williamson.

Williamson didn't stop there. Just five minutes after the first goal, he netted a rebound and doubled Laurier's lead to 2-0.

The second started with a goal from Brock's Ethan Sims, cutting Laurier's lead in half.

Although Brock beat Golden Hawks starting goaltender Tristan Malboeuf - making his first career start for the purple and gold - Laurier was all over the Badgers, keeping the puck in the offensive zone for the rest of the period.

The Golden Hawks started the third shorthanded, throwing off the team's game and causing some disorganization on the ice.

Brock's Holden Rodgers scored on the power play to tie the game up with half a period left in regulation.

Both teams battled for the win, leading to some intensity that ended with a player in each penalty box heading into overtime.

Laurier's Malboeuf stood on his head during the extra frame, making multiple outstanding saves against Brock's odd-man rushes.

Although the pressure wasn't in the Golden Hawks' favour, captain Patrick Brown made the perfect pass in front of the net for Evan Benwell to beat Badgers goalie Samuel Vyletelka on a 2-on-1 break with just a minute left.

Despite Laurier killing off five of six Brock power-plays, the shorthanded minutes threw the Golden Hawks off balance and they struggled to generate offensive opportunities following penalties.

"Our only lows were getting momentum back after penalties," said Laurier's manager of men's hockey operations and head coach Kevin Forrest after the game. "It takes a shift or two to get back into your groove after playing shorthanded."

Game Notes

Tristan Malboeuf put on a show in his first OUA game, making 48 saves and holding on in overtime for Laurier to secure the win.

"When you're called upon as a goalie, it's your job to show up for the team," said Malboeuf.
