TORONTO, Ont. - The Golden Hawks women's basketball team wrapped up their preseason schedule on Sunday with a resounding 32-point victory over the Acadia Axewomen, 67-35.Â
It was Laurier's second win in three games at the 36th annual Darcel Wright Memorial Classic, clinching a third-place finish for the purple and gold.
The Golden Hawks' three-in-three weekend, hosted by TMU at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, was capped by four quarters that Laurier never trailed in.Â
Veteran guard
Cassidy Hirtle recorded a game-high 24 points on 53% shooting in 26 minutes of action while the Golden Hawks - as a team - took full advantage of Acadia's turnovers, dominating the East Coast squad 30-6 in that category.
Forward
Janet Enge was the other Golden Hawk to finish in double-digits against the Axewomen, with 10 points in just 18 minutes of floor time.Â
Enge's output wrapped an impressive weekend for the fourth-year from Yellowknife, having recorded a game-high 21 points in Laurier's tournament-opening 65-60 win over Concordia on Friday.Â
Teammate - and fellow forward -
Kate White also had a double-double in that game with 13 points and 10 rebounds.Â
Laurier's lone loss came at the hands of the host Bold on Saturday by a 69-63 score. After being outscored by 12 in the opening frame, the Golden Hawks never fully recovered despite a 21-point night from Hirtle and Laurier keeping TMU's shooting at no higher than a combined 37% in each the final three quarters.
Another bright spot in defeat was rookie guard
Ella Thomas' 14 points.
After finishing the preseason with an impressive 5-2 record, Laurier's focus now turns to the regular season opener at York on Friday night.Â
The Golden Hawks will play one more on the road Sunday afternoon at McMaster before returning for its home-opening weekend, which begins on Friday, November 1 against the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
