Golden Hawks shut out 3-0 by Queen's to split road trip

KINGSTON, Ont. - Back on the ice just over 12 hours after securing a four-goal win against RMC, the Golden Hawks' scoring dried up in a 3-0 loss to Queen's on Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Centre.

Laurier was looking to leave the Limestone City a perfect two for two on their season-opening road trip. They were shut out instead for the second time this season by a Gaels team that were winners in three of their first four games heading into action.

The first period was a tough battle, as each team had multiple scoring chances but were unable to get through each other's defensive zones.

The period ended without a tally on the scoreboard, although the Gaels seemed to come away the most motivated.

Queen's opened the second period with a goal just two minutes in by Nolan Hutcheson, capitalizing on traffic at the net that tied up Laurier goaltender Paris O'Brien.

Ethan Larmand scored for the visitors less than three minutes later, giving the Gaels a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes.

Tensions rose near the end of the frame, leading to multiple infractions including Isaac Sooklal's 10-minute misconduct which set Queen's up for a two-man advantage to begin the third.

Holden Katzalay capitalized on the 5 on 3, scoring 62 seconds into the final frame to give the home side a 3-0 lead.

Laurier couldn't break through their opponent's defensive unit and ended the game without a goal, mustering only 18 shots on goal while going 0 for 3 on the powerplay.

Game Notes

As the lowest-scoring team in the OUA West with just 10 goals and carrying the lowest conversion rate on the powerplay at 7.1% over their first five games, the Golden Hawks hope that a big rivalry game this week will spark the offence.
