OTTAWA, Ont. – The Golden Hawks took flight on Friday to take on the #2-ranked team in U SPORTS, the Carleton Ravens, in the nation's capital.
Going into the game the Ravens had an impressive record of 14-1, the best in the OUA. The Golden Hawks showed no fear, attacking hard right off the whistle and opening the scoring with two flawless free throws by Janet Enge closely followed by a basket from second year guard Kate White. The Golden Hawks clung to the lead for the first four minutes of play but were overtaken by the Ravens around the halfway mark of the quarter. The Ravens seemed to have almost perfect accuracy as they quickly went on a 21-point run to finish the first quarter with a lead of 29-8.
The Ravens squad kept their foot on the gas pedal throughout the second quarter as their lead continued to climb, almost doubling the gap they created in the first quarter. Despite the tough Carleton defence, the Golden Hawks were able to double their score, putting up eight more points. Hirtle gave a strong offensive quarter and secured five points in the second, leading her team, closely followed by Alexa Sawchuck who added three points in the quarter.
The Ravens carried their strong offensive drives into the third quarter as the Golden Hawks continued to fight to keep the Ravens lead as small as possible. The Golden Hawks put up a strong quarter with four different shooters making it onto the board for their highest scoring quarter thus far. Even as Laurier made some headway offensively, they found it difficult to manufacture runs due to Carleton's excellent rebounding. The Ravens won the battle on the glass 51-24.
The fourth quarter featured a true battle of defence from Laurier and Carleton resulting in the lowest scoring quarter for both teams. Kate White and Miranda Campbell secured three points apiece while Dylann Mazzuchin put a two-point jump shot in the net making the final score of the game 82-39 for the Ravens.
Kate White led the Golden Hawks with 12 points while adding three rebounds and two steals. The Ravens got matching 20-point performances from Kali Pocrnic and Teresa Donato, while Tatyanna Burke had a game-high 14 rebounds off the bench.
Carleton improves to 15-1 with the win, while Laurier falls to 8-7 but remain well within the OUA playoff picture.Â
