Fans are also encouraged to attend the team's Shoot for the Cure game on Saturday, January 20 against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Tip-off is set for 6 pm at the Laurier Athletic Complex Gym in Waterloo, and proceeds from ticket sales will also be donated towards the fundraising efforts.
Game tickets can be purchased online or at the gate.
Fourth-year guard Miranda Campbell described how a team visit to the Terry Fox monument in St. John's, Newfoundland during the team's preseason trip inspired the squad.
"We thought it would be fitting to raise money for his foundation as we believe he is one of the greatest Canadians to ever live," Campbell said.
"Cancer is something that affects us all, so we must do as much as we can to raise awareness and funds to help find a cure."
Laurier's third-year guard Emmanuelle Felix conveyed how the Shoot for the Cure campaign allows the team to make an impact beyond the basketball court.
"It allows our team to make a difference in the lives of families affected by cancer while highlighting the power of sports in driving positive change," Felix said. "This annual effort not only contributes to research and support networks but also fosters a sense of unity with our local community here in Waterloo."
Since the fundraising initiative was founded by Rod Gilpin - the long-time bench boss of the Bishop’s women’s (1993-2008) and men's (2008-Present) programs - and handed off to be managed currently by UNB women's basketball head coach Jeff Speedy, over $1.75 million in donations has been raised to date by all 48 U SPORTS women’s basketball programs.
