Golden Hawks earn a draw with last-minute equalizer

TORONTO, Ont. – The Laurier Golden Hawks took on the York Lions for their second game of the 2023 season this Sunday. Going into the first half, the Golden Hawks knew they would have to bring their A-game and hold the intensity shown during their last match against York for the full 90 minutes. The ladies did not disappoint, capturing a 1-1 draw with the York Lions thanks to Kyra Walker's added time goal.

From the first whistle, it was clear that today's game would be nothing short of the battle head coach Barry MacLean predicted. York held the majority of possession through the first half, and had chances on two free kicks from just outside the 18-yard box.

Starting the second half, York continued to hold possession, moving the ball quickly across the field on this very hot day. Despite this, the Golden Hawks defence displayed a great level of cohesiveness as they moved to cover the Lions' attack. York scored the first slightly chaotic goal of the match off a rebound at the 60-minute mark, waking up a fire inside both teams.

In the 95', substitute Kyra Walker scored off a beautiful cross from Jyanessa Sealy, making it a 1-1 game. The Golden Hawks dug in and made it through the last portion of added time and managed to capture a 1-1 draw and another point in the standings.

Top Performers

Laurier Golden Hawks

#10 – Jada Johnson

The second-year forward was everywhere on the pitch in all the best ways. She showed a strong defensive front throughout the game and even got a solid block on the original shot resulting in York's goal. Jada then turned around and became a true force on offence, leading the team with three shots while showing unbridled energy and intensity.

York Lions

#7 – Maia Torelli

Torelli was a pillar for her team throughout the entire game. With strong offensive pressure and even stronger shots, it's no surprise that fellow York players look for Torelli when they are setting up plays.
