Golden Hawks secure their second win of the weekend

WATERLOO, Ont. – The Golden Hawks took the field this Sunday for their second game against the Algoma Thunderbirds. Just like the first match of the weekend doubleheader, the Golden Hawks triumphed over the Thunderbirds with a 9-0 win, securing three more points and their second win of the season.

The Thunderbirds entered the game with more confidence and determination then they had previously shown.

Lexi Kroeker fittingly opened the scoring, having done so on Saturday as well, capturing her fifth goal of the weekend. Shortly after, Jyanessa Sealy scored back-to-back goals before Meaghan Hogg scored off of a well-timed run, and Kroeker notched a second  before the halftime whistle was blown. This brought the total talley up to 5-0 Golden Hawks at the end of the first half.

Going into the second, Laurier made wholesale changes to its onfield lineup, which gave every player who dressed real field time. During the second half, Tamara Lisser and Sasha Marikano both scored while Jyanessa Sealy captured her first hat trick of the season. Mackenzie Forte scored the final goal with only 30 seconds left in the match.

Sealy shared after the game how, despite the lopsided score, she "was impressed by how "the Thunderbirds adjusted to our defence and tuned in to player subs and change in structure throughout the game."

Top Performers

Laurier Golden Hawks

#2 – Jyanessa Sealy

Sealy's performance in today's match showed strength and confidence, from the slide tackles made, to the plays she called and even the way she struck the ball.

Sealy herself said she was proud of the way the Golden Hawks performed. "It wasn't scrappy, even though a goal is a goal. The type of finishing today was really impressive."

Algoma Thunderbirds

#1 – Makayla Townes

Keeper Makayla Townes put on a really strong performance in today's match. She remained positive and scrappy no matter the score and was evidently putting in her fullest effort putting up 13 saves in 90 minutes.
