Playoff hopes take a hit in loss to Windsor

WINDSOR, Ont. - Laurier's playoff aspirations took a bit of a hit on Wednesday night in a 61-51 loss on the road against the Windsor Lancer.

Coming off two big wins over Algoma on the weekend, the Golden Hawks had a promising start, storming out to a ten-point lead after the first quarter. Throughout the first half of play, Janet Enge led the scoring for Laurier, recording 10 of her 12 points on the night in the opening frame alone, going three for three from behind the arc, and grabbing five rebounds.

Even with the Golden Hawks shooting just over 25% from the field, they found success from three at just under 36%.

Experiencing a bit of a scoring drought in the second quarter, with just nine points to their name, Windsor took full advantage and recovered from their rough start to take a 29-27 lead going into halftime.

In the offensively-challenging second half, both teams combined to go 0 for 21 from three. Due to this, the game was won with offence in the paint, and Windsor dominated in that aspect - outscoring the Golden Hawks 40-20 in that area by the end of the game.

Windsor only shot 33% from the field overall, but Laurier's 22% allowed the home side to secure the home-court win.

Despite Laurier out-rebounding the Lancers 29-20, thanks to a matching game-high ten from Miranda Campbell and rookie Kate White, the extra opportunities did not pay dividends. Combined with 12 turnovers, the Golden Hawks couldn't find a foothold to get very much going on the offensive side of the ball, scoring just 24 points over the final two quarters.

With 11 points on the night, Campbell continued her impressive play for the Golden Hawks, extending her streak of double-doubles to three consecutive games while playing a season-high 33 minutes.

Enge, the second-year from Yellowknife, NT, also finished with double-digit scoring totals for the third straight game.

Even with the mid-week loss, the Golden Hawks still have a chance to qualify for 12th and final playoff spot. They need to defeat Western on the road in their final regular season game and also have Laurentian lose their final two games; against Ontario Tech on Friday and Queen's Saturday.
