Golden Hawks suffer shootout Blues

[Toronto, ON] - After a successful night at home against the TMU Bold, the Laurier Golden Hawks travelled to Toronto to face off against the Varsity Blues on Friday. The purple and gold put together another hard-fought game but fell 3-2 in the shootout.

The Varsity Blues struck first as Cole Purboo found the back of the next on a rebound 7 minutes into the first period. The goal was his fifth of the season.

The purple and gold were unable to beat Toronto netminder Jett Alexander until late in the second period when Eli Reimer sent a pass to Sam Rhodes, who fired a shot into the back of the net for his fifth of the campaign.

Laurier put the gas on in the third period, but it was UofT who took the lead 6:20 into the frame.

The Golden Hawks would not let up and were rewarded in the dying seconds of the third period. Eli Reimer was on the doorstep to bang home the rebound of a Patrick Brown shot to force overtime.

However, nobody was able to score the sudden-death goal in the extra frame so the game was decided in a shootout.

Toronto's first shooter, Cole Purboo, scored on his attempt. Laurier's three shooters were unable to beat Alexander, solidifying Toronto's victory in the shootout.

Despite the loss, Propp was stellar for the second straight night. He stopped 41 of 43 shots in this one and 45 of 46 last night, which is good enough for a 0.966 save percentage over the back-to-back.

The Golden Hawks come out of this set of back-to-back games against challenging teams with 3 of 4 potential points.

The purple and gold turn their attention to the Guelph Gryphons, who they host at the Sunlife Financial Arena on Thursday night at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now.
