WATERLOO, Ont. - The Golden Hawks hosted the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Saturday afternoon and were looking to get back into the win column after a tough loss earlier in the week against the #6 ranked Guelph Gryphons.
The Golden Hawks and Ridgebacks have been matched up twice already in the season, with the Golden Hawks winning both games, 4-1, and were looking to do so again on Saturday afternoon.
After a hard-fought battle for the first twenty minutes of the game, and many chances for both teams, the game was scoreless heading into the second period.
Early in the second period, Jersey Lindley stick handled around the Ridgebacks defenders but couldn't get a shot off. Just minutes later, the Ridgebacks came back in full force towards Golden Hawk goaltender, Acadia Carlson, but went crossbar and out.
Just over halfway through the period, the Ridgebacks took a boarding penalty, giving the Golden hawks the power play. After beautiful passing the entire penalty, Elle Spencer fed the puck to Arielle MacDonald who put it in the back of the net.
Just a minute later, the Ridgebacks retaliated and evened out the score, making it 1-1. Heading into the third period with a tie game, both teams were eager to get the win.
Tensions were running high late in the third period as Laurier had several chances deep in the Ridgebacks zone, but couldn't get anything past Ontario Tech goalie Zoe McGee, and the game headed into overtime.
The Ridgebacks took a slashing penalty with five minutes left in overtime, making it a 4-on-3 for Laurier. Two minutes later, the Ridgeback player came out of the box for a breakaway, but Arielle MacDonald hustled back and hit the puck away.
Not long after, there was a scramble in front of the Laurier net, causing a controversial goal or no goa; situation. However, as the puck did not cross the goal line, no goal was declared, and the play continued.
After a lot of chances for both teams in overtime, the game went into a shootout. After four shooters for each team, the Ontario Ridgebacks take the shootout win, 2-1.
Despite the loss, the Golden Hawks outshot the Ridgebacks 42-33.
