University Stadium through the years

As your Golden Hawks prepare to take the field for this Saturday’s OUA football semi-final against the Windsor Lancers, the potential looms that this will be the final event held at University Stadium as we know it.

The Western Mustangs, as the OUA’s top seeded team, earned home field advantage through the playoffs. Assuming they avoid an upset in their semi-final matchup against the Queen’s Gaels, they will host the Yates Cup on Saturday November 11th.

Following the conclusion of the fall sports season, the Seagram Project will move into phase 1a with the demolition of the turf, track, lighting and scoreboard. This follows the already completed demolition and removal of the historic grandstand, completed over the summer of 2023.

In its place for the Fall 2024 season will be new state-of-the-art turf, scoreboard, and lighting, as well as footings for the new winter-use dome. These renovations, while significant, are just the beginning of the planned multi-phase Seagram Drive Athletics & Recreation project.

Laurier took ownership of University Stadium (known then as Seagram Stadium) from the City of Waterloo in 1991. Before 1991, it was still the home of the Golden Hawks and the site for many memories. Since 1991, it’s continued to host many significant events including:

  • Football: ‘04 & ‘05 Yates Cups
  • Women’s Lacrosse: ‘03, ‘05, ‘06, ‘07, ‘08 Provincial Championships
  • Men’s Soccer: ‘00 Provincial Championship.

It’s also been home to dozens of Homecomings, hundreds of regular season varsity games, and countless community events.

University Stadium holds a special place in the community and the hearts of many current and former Golden Hawks. It’s been the site for many Golden moments with this Saturday’s OUA semi-final football game promising to be yet another.

We hope you’ll join us in sending off our beloved University Stadium in style and ushering in the next era of Laurier Golden Hawks Athletics & Recreation.

Tickets for Saturday’s game are available online. While supplies last, current Laurier students can take advantage of free tickets, courtesy of the Office of the VP, Student Affairs. To claim a free ticket, students must do so online before Saturday. Limited to 1 per customer.

If you would like to contribute to the revitalization of the historic Seagram Drive Athletics & Recreation facilities, and health & wellness at Laurier, we hope you'll consider supporting the campaign.
