First period woes clip Golden Hawks' wings against Redbirds

Waterloo, ON - Laurier could not dig their way out of a first period hole, falling 4-2 to the visiting McGill Redbirds. The Golden Hawks have now lost four of their last five and sit eighth in the OUA West with a record of 3-8-2.

The Golden Hawks were given an early powerplay just eight seconds into the game, but were unable to take advantage and break the ice.

Shortly after Laurier's powerplay, Sullivan Sparkes received a major penalty and a game misconduct for head contact.

Laurier sacrificed three goals on the ensuing five-minute penalty kill. Stephane Howard showed off his speed and cut through Laurier's defence to open the scoring for the Redbirds.

Brandon Frattaroli finished off a nice passing play to extend the visiting squad's lead. The assists went to Eric Uba and Zachary Gallant. Gallant then scored a goal of his own on a rebound later in the powerplay to put McGill up 3-0 only 6:04 into the first period.

McGill found themselves in penalty trouble of their own late in the second period and gave Laurier multiple five-on-three opportunities. Nick Giunta scored his fifth goal of the season to put the Golden Hawks on the board.

Still on the powerplay less than a minute later, Eli Reimer scored his second of the campaign to cut further into the McGill lead. Declan Graham picked up his second assist of the night and Nick Guinta his second point.

Mathieu Gagnon found some room in the dying seconds of the second period and put the puck past Laurier netminder Ventsislav Shingarov to put the Redbirds up by a pair of goals.

Both teams had high-quality scoring chances in the third period, but both netminders shut the door, resulting in a 4-2 McGill victory.

Ventislav Shingarov had his first start on home ice and second of the season against the Redbirds. He settled in after the first period and went on to stop 41 of the 45 shots he faced on the night.
