Golden Hawks escape Thunderbirds with weekend sweep

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. - Taye Donald set a career-high in points for the second time in three games as the Golden Hawks weathered another resilient performance by the Algoma Thunderbirds to complete the weekend sweep.

Algoma jumped out to an 8-5 lead behind some early offensive prowess from third-year guard Johan Germain, who'd finish with a team-high 22 points.

A Donald three-pointer tied the game, and a Chidera Ubosi free throw put Laurier ahead roughly halfway through the first quarter. They wouldn't relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

The Thunderbirds didn't make it easy, staying right with the Golden Hawks through the middle quarters. The score remained close, 39-35 at halftime, and 61-55 heading into the final frame.

Once again it was the backcourt leading the way for Laurier. Donald and DeAndrae Pierre have been excellent over the past three games shouldering a heftier workload with Ethan Passley still dealing with an injury. They played 35 and 34 minutes, respectively in this game, and combined for 14 of the team's 20 fourth-quarter points to help secure the victory.

Having won both games of this weekend's back-to-back, the Golden Hawks leave Sault Ste. Marie with a 3-1 record on the season, and sit in second place in the OUA West division.

BY THE NUMBERS

34

It was another career night for Donald, but the way he's playing, don't expect 34 to remain his best total for too long. The second-year guard currently ranks second in the OUA with 25.8 points per game.

15

Like in Friday's game, the battle on the glass was a key advantage for the purple in gold, as they outrebounded Algoma 45-31, including 16 offensive boards. Leading the way was third-year forward Nana Boateng, who pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds.
