Golden Hawks lose by a pair to Brock to start 2023

ST. CATHERINES, Ont. - Grayden Gottschalk scored twice in Laurier's return from the holiday break but the Golden Hawks ultimately fell to the Brock Badgers 5-3 on the road in their third and final game in the season series.

Brock's Frank Pucci put a shot over the shoulder to open the scoring just over halfway through the first period.

Laurier struck back two minutes later when Grayden Gottschalk tipped an Adrian Nabuurs point shot past Brock's Roman Basran, who was playing in his first career OUA game.

Brock seemed to control much of the first period, outshooting the Golden Hawks 13-3 in the process. The break did not seem to be a factor for OUA all-star Propp, who made a multitude of big saves to keep the game tied at one.

Gottschalk potted his second of the game just 3:49 into the second period by using his large frame to his advantage as he banged home the rebound off a Chayse Herrfort shot.

Brock responded off the faceoff nine seconds later as Tyler Burnie sent a shot under the glove of Propp. The Badgers added another ten minutes later on the first powerplay of the game to retake the lead.

Laurier just over two minutes after that as a rebound from Nick Giunta's shot landed on the stick of sophmore Tyler Davis, who buried his second goal of the season. Laurier rookie Luke Wilson assisted on the goal, picking up his first career OUA point.

Despite almost doubling Brock in shots in the third period, the Golden Hawks couldn't put the puck past Basran. Brock broke the tie halfway through the third as Christian Girhiny redirected a pass off his backhand and over the outstretched leg of Propp. Brock scored an empty netter to secure their victory.

Despite the slow start in the first period, the Golden Hawks outshot the Badgers in both the second and third periods by a combined tally of 29-19.

Propp stopped 27 of the 31 shots that he faced on the night.

The Golden Hawks look to bounce back tomorrow night on the road as they take on the York Lions at the Canlan Ice Sports arena. You can catch all the action at 7:15 pm on OUA.tv.
