Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Austin Lacouvee

A tale of two halves in Laurier's loss to #10 McMaster

HAMILTON Ont. - After a narrow defeat to York exactly a week ago, the Golden Hawks women's basketball team was hoping to get back into the win column on the road at McMaster on Friday night. While Laurier was in better form in the second half, a tough opening two quarters had the purple and gold chasing the Marauders all game long, which eventually led to the team dropping their second straight game, 86-71.

In the first quarter, McMaster dominated all facets of the game. The Hawks shot just 25% from the field. The Marauders shot 50%. With that, McMaster out-rebounded the Hawks 17-7 while also recording six steals in the quarter. While it was a tough offensive quarter, rookie Kate White led the Hawks in scoring with seven points. She finished with a new career-high points total for a second straight game with 18 points in a season-high 29 minutes played.

The next quarter did not go much better for Laurier as they were outscored 22-17. Laurier did clean up their shooting, however, hurt themselves with eight turnovers. After the first half of play, Laurier trailed McMaster 52-32.

Laurier was stronger in the second half, outscoring McMaster 27-22. While Laurier did have another eight turnovers in the quarter, the Hawks did force the Marauders to turn the ball over nine times themselves, resulting in more offensive chances for the Golden Hawks. Laurier also shot extremely well, shooting just over 50 percent from the field.

Cassidy Hirtle took charge on the scoring front in the third quarter, recording 12 of her 14 points on the night by going 4 for 5 from beyond the arc.

The scoring slowed down for both teams in the fourth quarter, with each squad posting just 12 points a piece. Despite that, Miranda Campbell extended her run of double-digit scoring performances to five straight games by recording 14 points in the loss.
