ST. CATHERINES, Ont. - After a dramatic Battle at the Aud just 48 hours earlier, Laurier's women's hockey team took the ice on Friday night against Brock. Any momentum gained was lost as the Golden Hawks lost their sixth straight, 3-1.
Laurier had only faced off against the Badgers one other time this year in a game that featured an 18-round shootout. The Golden Hawks picked up a point as they were edged 2-1.
The opening period of this game featured back-and-forth action, but the Golden Hawks were the first to strike.
Rookie forward
Kylie Laliberte broke the ice for the Golden Hawks as she split two defenders before firing home a shot to score her second goal of the season midway through the first.
Sophomore
Christina McCulloch assisted on the goal, picking up her first point of the campaign as she suited up in just her third game of the year.Â
The Badgers responded with a goal of their own just 3:44 later when Claudia Murphy tipped a point shot from Ella Krushelnicki past rookie netminder
Kayla Renaud on the team's second powerplay of the game.
Renaud found herself between the pipes for her third start of the season and first since November. Renaud put on a strong performance, saving 21 of 24 shots sent in her direction on the night.Â
The Golden Hawks went on the hunt on the powerplay twice in the second period but were unsuccessful both times.Â
Madison Cronkwright scored to break the tie and give Brock their first lead of the game with 2:35 remaining in the second period.Â
Brock outshot Laurier 14-8 in the frame, but Renaud stood strong, making key saves to keep the Golden Hawks in the game. Â
Laurier surged in the third, doubling Brock in shots as they looked for the equalizer.
Elle Spencer took a shot that beat Brock's Kenzie Harmison, but not the crossbar, leaving the Golden Hawks down a goal.
Brock extended their lead halfway through the final frame off another point shot that was tipped on its way to the net, this time by Mikayla Flanagan.
The Golden Hawks played with urgency but to no avail. Laurier opted to pull Renaud with three minutes remaining in regulation but was unable to capitalize with the extra attacker.
