Lancers beat Laurier in second game of back-to-back

WATERLOO, Ont. – The Golden Hawks looked to break a three-game streak Friday night as they hosted the Windsor Lancers in the second half of a back-to-back. Despite their best efforts, Laurier dropped a 4-1 decision to the visitors.

The Lancers made it clear early in the game that they wanted to lock down their third win in a row. Only two minutes into the first period, they opened the scoring after a scramble in front of Golden Hawks goaltender Acadia Carlson. Carlson made three consecutive saves before Windsor's Keana McKibbin was able to get one across the goal line to start her team off with an early lead.

The Golden Hawks sped things up as the puck possession was back-and-forth for the following 15 minutes. However, with only three minutes to go in the first period, the Lancers potted a second goal courtesy of Elissa Benjamin's shot that found its way through Carlson's five-hole.

The second period brought speed, agility, and powerplays. Two minutes into the period, the Golden Hawks had an opportunity to tie it up with a five-on-three advantage, however, the Lancers' strategic penalty killing allowed them to successfully kill it off.

It was clear the purple and gold brought the heat in the second period of play with 15 shots on goal, compared to only five in the first 20 minutes of the game. Each team had one more powerplay opportunity, yet the penalty kills were too good to beat. The Golden Hawks continued to fight hard deep in the Lancer zone, yet the Windsor defence and goalkeeper Kristen Swiatoschik stood strong to keep their lead as they head into the third period.

The Golden Hawks came out strong in the third period looking to get on the board. However, Lancers forward Mia DiNardo had other ideas as she potted her first goal of the season after pouncing on a rebound from a shot by Maggie Peterson.

With 16 minutes to go in the period, the Golden Hawks did not let up. With a couple of powerplays, the purple and gold put on the pressure in the offensive zone, yet it wasn't until 14 minutes into the period that defender Arielle MacDonald skated end-to-end to get her first goal in nine games. MacDonald roofed a shot from the slot putting the puck behind Swiatoschik's left shoulder for her second goal of the season.

With five minutes to go, assistant coach Nik Knezic opted for the extra attacker, deciding to pull Carlson from her net. Despite the offensive zone cycling and puck movement, Lancers' Maggi DeWolf-Russ got a hold of the puck and shot it down the ice to make it 4-0.

With 10 minutes of powerplay time, Arielle MacDonald noted that her team "was getting the shots throughout the game, but [they] needed to be crashing the net for more garbage goals" in the future to take advantage of the extra player.

Three Stars

Kristen Swiatoschik – Windsor Lancers – third back-to-back win

Arielle MacDonald – Laurier Golden Hawks – her second goal of the season

Mia DiNardo – Windsor Lancers – her first goal of the season and second OUA career goal
