WSOFT split weekend match ups

WATERLOO, Ont. - The women's softball team had another 2-2 weekend in week two of the Ontario University Softball season, extending their season record to 4-4.

The Golden Hawks came out on their heels on Friday night in the Battle of Waterloo, as the Warriors went up early, 5-1. Laurier came back and took the lead 6-5 in the fourth before Waterloo answered back in the top of the fifth, scoring two of their own to take the 7-6 lead. Brooke Tweddle had two hits for the Golden Hawks in the losing effort.

Game two the Golden Hawks struggled to find their way, falling behind early and never able to catch up. The Warriors held the typically strong Laurier offence to just one hit and capitalized on an unusual six errors by the Golden Hawk defence for a 7-0 victory.

On Sunday, the Golden Hawks were on the road for the first time of the season as they took on the Guelph Gryphons. Laurier came out with the offence early this time. Brooke Cameron singled and reached third on an error when Sophia Malo doubled her in and reached on an error herself. The two teams would exchange runs in the second and Laurier scored three more in the fourth thanks to two of Cameron's 3RBIs in the game. Laurier then broke the score open in the seventh inning thanks to Claire Johnson who belted a 2RBI triple down the right field line. Hayley Shackell came in to close out the game in the seventh inning in relief of Brooke Cameron for the 12-4 win. Cameron gave up four hits and two runs for the win.

In game two, Laurier picked away early, scoring in three of the first four innings. Cameron led off with a single and was scored off a sacrifice fly by Olivia Shaddick to open the scoring. In the second inning, Tweddle singled and was scored off a single by Johnson. After Guelph took the lead in the top of the forth, Laurier answered right back as Serenity Mclellan and Tweddle lead the inning off with two singles. Romat had a sacrifice bunt and the top of the order executed to reclaim the lead. With two out in the bottom of the sixth, Guelph would intentionally walk Cameron who stole second and was scored on a seeing-eye single from Malo for an insurance run and the 5-3 win. Heather Dierks threw seven complete innings for her second win of the season.

Laurier will now face McMaster on Friday, September 30 and Brock Badgers on Saturday, October 1 both at Hillside Park. Follow the Golden Hawks on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @LaurierSoftball.
