WBASK defeat Algoma for first win of 2022

SAULT STE.MARIE - Laurier's women's basketball team was back in action on Friday night in Sault Ste. Marie for the first of two games against the Algoma Thunderbirds. Thanks to a solid defensive effort that saw only 19 points allowed in the second half, the Golden Hawks came away with a 58-46 win.

The first quarter started out rough for the Golden Hawks as they found themselves down 12-4 with four minutes left in the quarter. However, with the help of two late quarter three-pointers by Cassidy Hirtle (Sarnia, Ont.), the Hawks were able to tie up the game 14-14 going into the second quarter.

The second quarter found both teams going back and forth, keeping the game extremely close. The Hawks were able to take a two point lead going into half with a last second layup by Miranda Campbell (Toronto, Ont.). At the half, Laurier led Algoma 29-27.

Maddy White (Bolton, Ont.) came out firing in the third quarter, scoring seven of Laurier's first nine points of the quarter. Meanwhile, Algoma was able to keep it somewhat close with a few buckets of their own. Laurier's scoring slowed down to end the quarter, but still commanded a 44-39 lead going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, Algoma attempted a pushback making it a two point game, however Laurier took over, going on a 10-3 run to end the quarter and pull out the 58-46 win on the road. While Algoma dominated the glass, out rebounding Laurier 39-31, Laurier found their points off steals where they recorded 15 throughout the game resulting in a ton of fast break points.
