WINDSOR, Ont. – Laurier's women's hockey team picked up its first point of the season in a 3-2 overtime loss in Windsor Saturday night.
Â
The first period consisted of lots of back-and-forth play between the two teams. The period remained scoreless for the first 15 minutes until
Chloe Davidson opened the scoring with a wrist shot to put the purple and gold on the board first.
The Lancers evened up the score just four minutes later though as defensemen Jack Latham got one past
Acadia Carlson on the powerplay.
Â
The Golden Hawks came out strong in the second period with eight shots on goal, yet they couldn't get one past Windsor goaltender Holly Borrett. The Lancers had two more powerplay opportunities as well but the penalty kill was strong with Carlson making multiple saves to keep the score even at 1-1 going into the third.
Â
The final frame remained scoreless for the first half as both but Lancers' defensemen Maggie Mitani put the home team in the lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. However, the purple and gold were quick to respond as
Arielle MacDonald scores three minutes later to even the score up again. The remaining eight minutes were a fight to get one last goal before the buzzer went off, however both teams were unsuccessful as the game got pushed into overtime.
Â
In the extra frame, Windsor's Maggi DeWolf-Russ scored her first goal of the season to win it.
Â
Heading into a match-up against the Western Mustangs on home ice this Thursday, Manager of Women's Hockey Operations and Head Coach
Kelly Paton noted after the game that she's hoping to see "more production on five-on-five play to rely less on special teams goals".
