ST. CATHERINES, Ont. - Laurier's women's basketball team got a career-best performance from one of its veterans but fell just short in a 60-56 loss to the Brock Badgers on Saturday night.
With the Golden Hawks looking to rebound on the road after a season-opening defeat at home to Western on Friday night, points were at a premium to start the ball game with both teams combining for just 22. The Golden Hawks trailed 14-8 after the opening frame.
Things came alive in the second for the Golden Hawks as guards Miranda Campbell and Cassidy Hirtle, who would combine to score 19 of Laurier's 30 first-half points, spurred the team to outscore the Badgers in the frame, 22-13. Rookie Kate White also did the heavy lifting in the paint, hauling down an impressive eight rebounds as Laurier headed into the break with a 30-27 lead.
Laurier continued to dominate in the third, outscoring Brock 20-12. Campbell also continued her torrid offensive play en route to scoring 11 more points in the second half for a game and career-high 21.Â
Hirtle, an OUA all-rookie and a West Division second-team all-star last season, finished with 13 points on 50% shooting.
Things went stagnant in the fourth though, as the Golden Hawks only managed to record six points. Brock also dominated the paint with a 12-2 advantage in the quarter alone to help them narrowly complete the comeback and four-point victory - their seventh straight over the Golden Hawks dating back to January 9, 2019.Â
Despite consecutive losses to start the season, White finished with an impressive double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds) in just her second career OUA game.Â
