ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - After a convincing win against division rival Western to open the season at home on Friday, the Golden Hawks were defeated by the defending OUA champion Brock Badgers on the road Saturday. The final score was 84-58.
The game was all Brock to begin, as the Badgers went on an 8-0 run following the tip-off. Laurier's offence was finally jump-started by Taye Donald, who went on a 10-2 run all by himself about halfway through the frame.
The score was tied 17-17 heading into the second quarter, but the Golden Hawks once again struggled to start the period. Brock got the lead up to seven points before Laurier began to find their groove, once again around the midway mark of the quarter.
The Golden Hawks would eventually take a 30-29 lead. It would be their last lead of the night, as Brock went on an 8-2 run to finish the half, and never looked back.
The Badgers outscored Laurier 22-8 in the third quarter, and held them to 21% shooting from the field. The score was 59-40 heading into the fourth, and the Golden Hawks were unable to put a dent into their deficit in the final frame.
"In the first half, we took away their primary offence," said Manager of Men's Basketball Operations and Head Coach Justin Serresse. "In the second half they tried to attack us with different things, and they had more success."
The offence was well spread out for Brock, as six different Badgers reached double digits in points.
Now with a record of 1-1, the Golden Hawks will turn their attention to next weekend's back-back road games.
"The goal is to just be mentally and physically ready," said Serresse, "Then go out there and execute the game plan."
