TORONTO, Ont. - Laurier's women's basketball team ended their weekend on a high note Saturday night, snapping a three-game losing streak with their first win of the season, 72-69 over the Toronto Varsity Blues.
The first quarter was solid for Laurier, as they outscored the Varsity Blues 16-15. Having worked her way into the top 15 in OUA scoring,
Cassidy Hirtle recorded five points in nine minutes of action.
Laurier shot an impressive fifty percent from the field despite going just 1 for 4 from three. While Toronto did outrebound the Hawks, Toronto had five turnovers which Laurier was able to take advantage of.
The low scoring continued in the second quarter, as
Janet Enge led the way with six points - almost half of Laurier's points total in the frame. The shooting efficiency from Laurier took a massive drop in the second quarter though, with the Hawks shooting just 24 percent from the field. They were able to keep the game close despite that, going into the second half of play with the game tied 49-49.
The third quarter saw the Hawks score 26 points on the strength of four three-pointers. In their past games, Laurier had struggled to get it going after the break, but it was a different story on this night. Hirtle continued to put up numbers for the Hawks with six.
Alexa Sawchuk and
Dylann Mazzuchin got in on the action as well with five points apiece as Laurier took a 75-67 lead.
Sawchuk finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, matching her career-highs for each. Mazzuchin set a new career best as well nine points
Hirtle continued her dominance in the fourth quarter while shooting a perfect 3 for 3 from the field and adding nine more points en route to finishing with a career (and game) high 23 points.
While Toronto outrebounded Laurier 41-31, they also turned the ball over 31 times which played a big factor in the game too as Laurier secured the road win.
The Golden Hawks have now won seven straight over the Varsity Blues dating back to February 2016.
