Laurier shut out by #8 Nipissing Lakers

NORTH BAY, Ont. - The search for the season's first victory will continue a little longer for the Laurier women's hockey team as they were shut out by the #8 ranked Nipissing Lakers 3-0 on Saturday afternoon

The Golden Hawks came out strong in the first period as their offence was pushing to get an early goal against the East division leaders. Lakers forward Lana Duriez opened the scoring just 5:10 into the first period, getting the puck past Golden Hawks goaltender Acadia Carlson on a back-hander.

The remainder of the period involved a powerplay opportunity for each team, but neither converted.

The second period remained scoreless for the majority despite the Lakers and the Golden Hawks getting powerplay opportunities. However, with just under two minutes left in the frame, Lana Duriez got her second point of the night as she sprung Malory Dominico on a nice pass. Dominico took full advantage, scoring on a rebound to extend the Lakers' lead to 2-0.

The Lakers began the third with speed as they attempted to extend their lead over the purple and gold. The period consisted of quick back-and-forth play between the two teams. From the powerplay opportunity and the constant pressure in the offensive zone, the Golden Hawks had many opportunities to get on the board but remained unsuccessful.

The Lakers put up one last goal on a quick rebound from forward Maggie McKnee to put her team up 3-0. Despite the Golden Hawks keeping it close on the shot clock with 21 shots compared to the Lakers' 23, they couldn't get one past the Nipissing goalie Chantelle Sandquist.

The Golden Hawks are still searching for their first season win as they continue to play with pressure, speed, and good defence. They will look to put more pucks behind the goal line when they return home on Thursday night to face Toronto.

Three Stars

Lana Duriez – Nipissing Lakers (one goal, one assist)

Chantelle Sandquist – Nipissing Lakers (shut out)

Chloe Saxton – Laurier Golden Hawks (consistent offence for the Golden Hawks)
