The women's softball team had a critical weekend of play in week 3 of the Ontario University Softball season, going 3-1.
The Golden Hawks opened Friday night against McMaster. In the bottom of the first, Sophie Malon and
Emma Diegel both singled and scored on another single up the middle by
Hayley Shackell. McMaster would tie the game at four apiece in the third inning when Laurier responded to break it open. The Golden Hawks added two more in the fifth en route to a 10-6 win.
Brooke Cameron picked up the win for Laurier with
Heather Diercks coming on in relief. Cameron, Malo and Shackell each had two RBIs while Malo lead the offense with four hits.
The bats came alive in game two against Marauders as Laurier had 10 hits in the game, scoring 10 runs. Serenity Mclellan led the way with three hits for the purple and gold. The Golden Hawks scored in every inning, breaking things open in the third inning with four runs. Laurier ended the game with a 10-1 run rule win for the sweep over McMaster.
Saturday afternoon was the final home game of the season for the Golden Hawks with the highly touted Brock Badgers coming into town. The Badgers gave the purple and gold an eye opener in game one, trouncing the Golden Hawks 14-1. Laurier had a response in game two however. In a pitchers dual and scoreless through three complete,
Brooke Tweddle reached based off a Badger error followed by a hit by pitch and walk to load the bases, Shaddick singled in the first run of the game. Chay Romat then had a safety squeeze bunt to score Mclellan and
Claire Johnson belted a triple down the left field line to score the third run of the inning.
Heather Diercks was lights out on the mound, throwing seven complete and giving up five hits for the 3-0 win.
