First period lead spoils Golden Hawk rematch against Warriors

WATERLOO, Ont. – The Laurier Golden Hawks were shut down 6-1 by the Waterloo Warriors in Saturday afternoon's second Battle of Waterloo of the weekend.

The first period of play was a tough start for the purple and gold. The Warriors came out strong with a five-hole goal on the powerplay, shot from the point by defence Jessie Fennell.

The Golden Hawks proceeded to generate a few opportunities in the Warrior zone, however, Warriors forward Olivia Parkinson snuck a second goal by Golden Hawks goalie Victoria Kelaiditis to expand Waterloo's lead to 2-0.

The Warriors put up two more back-to-back goals with less than two minutes left in the period, giving the visitors a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Manager of Hockey Operations and Head Coach Kelly Paton opted to make a goalie switch to begin the new period. Acadia Carlson stood strong in goal to keep the team in the game as they defended a five-on-three in the middle of the period.

Laurier had limited opportunities due to three penalty kills throughout the period yet was able to defend them all successfully.

The Warriors, however, did not let up. With only two minutes left in the period, forward Brooklyn Cole and defence Jalen Duffy each managed to get a shot by Carlson to finish off the second period with a 6-0 lead.

The third period remained scoreless for 16 minutes until Golden Hawks captain Steph Caleca trickled the puck in behind Warriors goalie Mikayla Shnarr to put Laurier on the scoreboard and break the shutout bid.

The Golden Hawks look to put this loss behind them as they hit the road to play the Windsor Lancers in two back-to-back games next weekend.

When asked who she was expecting to shine, Paton noted to look out for forward Chloe Davidson and defence Arielle MacDonald in those two games. She also stated that she "expects this matchup to be physical due to the smaller rink" and hoped to secure a win as they "had success against them in pre-season with an overtime win".

Three Stars

Mikayla Shnarr – Waterloo Warriors (26 saves)

Olivia Parkinson – Waterloo Warriors (one goal & one assist)

Steph Caleca – Laurier Golden Hawks (one goal)
