Lancers get four unanswered goals to defeat Golden Hawks

WATERLOO, Ont. - In the second game of a home opening weekend double-header, the visiting Windsor Lancers came away with the sweep after a 5-1 over Laurier on Saturday night.

Laurier had a couple of chances early into the game, but it would be the Lancers to break the ice. Windsor's Noah Gardiner scored a short-handed goal just over three minutes into the game, beating Laurier goaltender Christian Propp with a shot from the slot.

The penalty kill was called upon twice and answered by shutting down Windsor's powerplay, allowing the Golden Hawks to go into the first intermission down by one.

The Golden Hawks came out of the intermission flying. The first few minutes of the second were completely controlled by the Golden Hawks.

Even on the penalty kill, Laurier had quality scoring chances. Sullivan Sparkes blocked a shot and then flicked the puck over the head of a Windsor defenseman to a streaking Sam Rhodes, who almost potted his fourth goal in as many games.

The Golden Hawks went on to score the equalizer on the powerplay. Adrian Nabuurs buried his first of the year after the puck squirted out of a crowd of bodies in front of the Windsor net.

The game did not remain tied for long. The Lancers answered quickly, scoring the go-ahead goal just thirty seconds later. The Lancers scored again with just two minutes left in the second and the game headed to the third with the Golden Hawks behind by two.

Two more shots beat Propp in the third period as Windsor would go on to the eventual four-goal victory.

One positive to take from this weekend was Laurier's special teams. The Golden Hawks' powerplay was successful again and has now scored a powerplay goal in their last three games.

On top of that, their penalty kill remains perfect after tonight's game, even surviving a 5-on-3. The Golden Hawks denied every Lancer opportunity, throwing their bodies into passing and shooting lanes.

"Your teammates feed off of that seeing their teammates sacrifice like that," said Interim Manager of Men's Hockey Operations & Head Coach Kevin Forrest, "[Blocking shots] is a huge part of the penalty kill and a huge part of winning."

Moving forward, the Golden Hawks will look for their first win in a battle against the undefeated Brock Badgers at home next Thursday at 7 p.m. Tickets are available now at tickets.laurierathletics.com
