WHKY shut out by Windsor on home ice

Box Score

WATERLOO, Ont. – In what turned out to be a hard-fought, physical contest against a divisional rival, Laurier's women's hockey team came out on the losing end of a 3-0 score against the Windsor Lancers on Friday evening.

The Golden came into the game with hopes of getting their first win on home ice this season. Instead, the Lancers scored a goal in each period, leaving the Hawks with no choice but to try again in Saturday's scheduled matinee.

The first period was a tight battle but with flowing back-and-forth play With only six minutes to go in the first, Maggi DeWolf-Russ (Belle River, Ont.) pocketed a beautiful pass out front from Paige McArthur (Macdonald, Man.) for her first tally of the year to give the visitors the lead.

The Hawks continued to fight hard trying to tie the game, but the Lancers were able to grab another goal in the second period thanks to Rylee Hogan (Whitby, Ont.) also scoring her first of the season just past the midway point of the frame.

In the final period, Laurier pushed back and had only one less scoring attempt than Windsor. Unfortunately, the Lancers were able to notch their third and final goal of the game, with Elissa Benjamin (Nanaimo, BC) recording her first of 2021 to help her team get in the win column.

Following the game, Laurier head coach Kelly Paton credited Windsor’s ability to score goals through their physicality.

“Leading into tomorrow, we have to match their intensity, especially on the board-side battles, and come up with pucks more times than not.”
