Box Score ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Golden Hawks women’s hockey team captured their first victory of the season on Thursday night by spoiling the Brock Badgers' home opener with a 1-0 win.
Laurier was looking to get in the win column after consecutive losses against Waterloo to start their season. The Badgers, on the other hand, got back-to-back wins over Windsor this past weekend, giving them some momentum heading into tonight's game.
The Hawks came out strong in front of the over 600 energetic fans in attendance at Seymour-Hannah Arena; outshooting the Badgers 11-5 in the first period.
Despite the back-and-forth pace from both sides, the first period ended without a goal.
That all changed eight minutes into the second period when Emily Visser (Caledonia, Ont.) grabbed the puck off a rebound and planted it in the back of the Badgers' net to give Laurier the lead they would never relinquish.
The victory was the team's first since their final regular season game of the 2019/20 season - which was also a 1-0 win (against York).
Cohen Myers (Shakespeare, Ont.) once again back-stopped Laurier with a solid performance between the pipes, saving all 29 shots by the Badgers for her fourth career OUA shutout. Three games into the season, Myers sits first in the conference in save percentage (.950) and second in goals against average (1.37).
